Ravens Eat Snakes

SUMMARY

The Corven family was a freewalker (later wanderer) family that ruled over the First Kingdom of Corvena, a kingdom on the plane of Novearth. Once subjects of freewalker rule, the Corven’s declared independence, and for a few hundred years ruled as the Raven Kings of Corvena. The sudden rise and conquests of the wanderer culture changed that, resulting in Corvena being annexed by the Wandering Kingdom and the Corven’s becoming lesser lords on a different plane.

The Corven family adapted well to their new role as vassals of wanderer rulers for years, cultivating one of the wealthiest powerhouses in wanderer society.  Throughout most of their new role, the Corven’s never played their hand too heavily in the political struggles, instead focusing on their own prominence. However, the loss of the original wanderer royal family began a string of poor rulers known as the Reign of Lies; during this period, the Corven’s opted to manipulate all sides of the struggles for the throne against each other, all the while serving their own needs. The Corven’s ultimately conspired to seize the Wandering Throne for themselves, but this plan backfired when they were betrayed in turn, resulting in the complete massacre of the Corven family, ending their long history.

The Corven family is remembered both for its accomplishments as much as it is remembered for its prominence; during their prime, they were considered the wealthiest family in wanderer society. Scholars have jokingly stated that this is due to their imports, for when Corvena was annexed, the Corven’s were given dominion over a different plane that was known for producing syrup and bacon. The Corven’s supposedly capitalized on this new prospect, cultivating a trade venture focused on exporting syrup and bacon to the other wanderer planes and lands.

KNOWN CORVEN FAMILY MEMBERS

Addon Corven

Famous hero of the first Reflection and longtime friend of Antonian the Husky King, Addon rose up against the Free Lords and founded the Kingdom of Corvena, reigning as the first Raven King. After the Reflection, Addon was given lordship over the plane of Novearth, but due to increasing interference from his fellow Free Lords, Addon opted to declare independence from the failing Throne of the Free. He ruled as the first Raven King for ten years, his reign ending when he mysteriously disappeared.

Matthew Corven

King Addon’s son and the second Raven King, legendary for defending Corvena from a Dragon Lord, who had allegedly desired the seemingly prosperous lands of the Plane of Novearth for himself. Unable to convince King Matthew and his folk to leave, the Dragon Lord simply sought to burn the freewalkers out of the plane, and was ultimately lured into a trap and killed.

Mattrick Corven

The last Raven King, who surrendered his kingdom to the Wandering Throne in order to prevent the massacre of his family and folk. In exchange for the surrender, Mattrick and his family were given dominion over a different plane, while Novearth became a province of the Wandering Kingdom.

Starrah Corven

King Mattrick’s younger sister. According to folklore, she was the one that convinced King Mattrick to surrender to the wanderers.

Storrel Corven

Lord of the Corven lands during the Reign of Lies, Storrel was a political mastermind who sought to place the Corven’s as the next royal family to rule the Wandering Throne. He very nearly succeeded, but his machinations resulted in the massacre and end of his family.

Addon II Corven

Lord Storrel’s eldest son, who was made the first and only Corven King of Wanderers at the age of ten. Due to his declining health, Lord Storrel put forth young Addon as a candidate for the Wandering Throne, beginning a short period of relative peace. Addon ruled for about eleven years, later choosing to abdicate in favor of one his advisors.

Matthon Corven

Lord Storrel’s second son, who conspired to regain the throne after Addon II abdicated. Like the other Corven’s, Matthon was killed when the family was betrayed.

NOTES

  • Matt – and variations of the name – is a traditional name in the Corven family.
  • Along with syrup and bacon, some folk believe there is a rare animal with antlers that was also exported by the Corven family.

A buddy of mine will get a laugh out of this one.

You might be wondering - but probably not - why I haven't uploaded anything lately. Well I can tell you that I have something like a few hundred files (most of them unfinished) worth of nonsensical ramblings like this one. The reason why I haven't uploaded anything is because there's an important plot point that I haven't figured out yet, and it's been bothering me for awhile - and also the fact that I've been focused on other crap lately.

This is probably, albeit indirectly, the biggest spoiler in the story to date. Maybe. Not really.
